If you’ve ever been camping, chances are you’ve sung the
song “Home on the Range”. It’s been in the Boy Scout Handbook, recorded by Bing
Crosby and Burl Ives (among many others), used in movies (“Mr. Blanding Builds
His Dream House”—one of my favorites), and Willie Nelson even recorded it for
the movie “The Messenger” as recently as 2009. Even Bugs Bunny sang it!
So when I found out
that I would be near the Home on the Range Cabin, I had to stop by. The
original cabin still stands, and the current owners are fine with people
driving onto their property and (respectfully) visiting the cabin.
They’ve added a
plaque to Dr. Brewster Higley, the lyricist – and the original song (originally
called “My Western Home”) is right there on the side of the cabin. Who knew
that we’d all come to love the Kansas State Song? (I mean, does Utah even have a state song???)
It’s a charming and
humble cabin – smaller than my 2-car garage. Hard to believe that people used
to do all their living and even have large families in such a small space. But
it also goes to show that some things are timeless – like enjoying the
peacefulness of being “away from it all,” like at this cabin. Or the
timelessness of this classic song.
