OK, so here are the
details. I bought a 1981 Winnebago Brave. It has a Chevy 454 engine that’s in
great shape, the roof and body are in good shape, and it’s “only” got 75,000
miles (the engine will go 200,000). And, yes, I got a screamin’ deal on it.
Sure, it needs a little work — but I think that’s the part I’m excited about.
I remember 1981. I started high school in 1981. I had Farrah
Fawcett hair, MTV had just started, and Jane Fonda and “On Golden Pond” were
all the rage. I had Early Morning Seminary with the most amazing group of
friends that ever existed — and I drove a flourescent Ford Fairmont. It was a
fun time in my life, but probably not the most fashionable time in my life.
Based on the interior of my Winnebago, it wasn’t a stylish time for home
furnishings either.
What does it need?
Initially: a couple of new tires and rotating the duallys, a carburetor
rebuild, a few belts and hoses replaced, and an oil change. But for a
30-year-old motorhome, that’s a pretty short list. Besides, I’ve got all of
that checked off the list and a clean-bill-of-health from the Safety &
Emissions.
So what still needs to happen? For the body: a patch of one
leak on the roof, a thorough wash job (including removing 30-years of
oxidation), some new paint on the stripes and detail, and a can of spray paint
on the wheels — and the outside will be in fabulous shape.
And on the inside?
Oh, I have plans. A bit of gutting has already begun, and I’m even
getting bold enough to learn about the generator and engine in this beast. A
bit of paint, ideas from Pinterest, and a few fun projects on the inside.
And Oh The Places I’ll Go!!!
My first weekend is currently being planned, and my first weeklong
roadtrip is coming up fast in 4-weeks. There are some fascinating places here
in Utah to visit, and I plan on spending a good chunk of this summer driving
this behemoth around to see them.
But mostly, I’m fulfilling a dream — and I’m having a blast.
