A few weeks ago I got
an amazing offer from my sister: she and
her husband would come down for a Saturday and help me around the house. What
an offer! My sister is a bit of a
cleaning fanatic (I mean, she has 8 kids and WHITE living room furniture) — and
my brother-in-law is fabulously handy. She told me to make a list, so I did.
Knowing they were coming also got me moving on getting some
stuff finished-up and cleaned-up. Admit it — we all do it — that cleaning
before someone comes to clean. A few years ago I had a friend that I traded
piano lessons for her daughters in exchange for house cleaning. It was a fabulous
deal for both of us. And before she came to clean, I cleaned — because none of
us want anyone knowing how we “really” live.
Oh, my sister knows
that I’m no Clean Freak — which is I’m sure why she volunteered. She came and
did floors. He turned on the sprinklers, and then fixed the whole system. My
niece organized all my tupperware. And I spent the day cleaning up the garage.
Things got fixed, installed, cleaned — a flurry of activity all day long.
It was one of those days when you get a million things done.
By late afternoon we were all tired, but there was also a tremendous sense of
accomplishment. And a huge sense of gratitude.
We all get so busy in our lives that we let little things
go. And more than just the things that got done around my house, I got a HUGE
reminder that I have an amazing family, a sister that loves me very much, and a
perfect sister and brother-in-law who are always there for me — even if it
means giving up a precious Saturday.
