For Memorial Day, my
family usually gets together to do a Picnic. My brother-in-law and two of my
nephews all work for Rocky Mountain Power — and there is a fabulous old Power
Plant up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Adjacent to this Power Plant, there is a fully-fenced
charming little park — and because the 3 of them work there, we can usually get
reservations for this park on Memorial Day.
I’ve lost track at the size of this family group now. My
sister has 8 kids, most are married, and there are 15 or 16 (or maybe 17)
grandkids now. We’re easily over 30 when we all get together. Everyone brings
something, pizza gets ordered, and all the little cousins run around and play
excitedly.
Alayna is one of the younger ones. and gets so excited about
things. The kids found an enormous moth, and she was DYING to show it to me. As
I was busy talking to my nephew about the fun things he has going on in his
life, I kept telling her “just a minute”. Well, to a 4-year-old, a minute is a
very long time.
Eventually I finished
my conversation, and this cute little girl had just been standing there waiting
and waiting and waiting — so excited to show this moth to me. OK, it really was
an enormous moth, but as moths go really quite exquisite in the beauty of it’s
wings. As she showed it to me, I could tell that she had the unique
appreciation of it’s beauty — and it was something I almost overlooked.
Fortunately I got the chance to get excited with her, take
her picture near it, and learn a very valuable lesson from a very little person.
Because there really is beauty in the ordinary, and even the simplest things in
this life are something to get truly excited about.
